With Patience unleashed a furious stretch run to just nail pacesetter Bright Gold in the final strides of the $50,000 Somethingroyal Stakes for Virginia-bred fillies and mares at Colonial Downs on Saturday.
With Patience covered the five and a half furlongs in 1:03.99.
With Patience broke sharply, but jockey Ryan Fogelsonger decided to rate her back into fifth as Bright Gold opened up a 2 1/2-length lead. Bright Gold flew through the opening quarter in :21.17 while With Patience enjoyed a rail trip in fifth, about four lengths off the lead. Bright Gold held a two-length lead as the field hit the turn. Fogelsonger swung With Patience outside of the pacesetter on the turn to launch the winning move.
Bright Gold cut the corner beautifully and opened up a 3 1/2-length lead at the top of the lane, but With Patience continued to gain on the leader through the stretch abd wrested the lead in the final strides to win by a half-length. Key Wi Miss was another six lengths back in third.
Elizabeth Hendriks owns and trains With Patience. The 5-year-old With Approval
mare pushed her lifetime bankroll past $200,000 with the win. With Patience is now two for two over the Secretariat Turf Course, both in Virginia-bred stakes.
Fogelsonger won three races on Saturday to further extend his lead in the Colonial jockey standings. Through seven days of racing, the defending champion has 17 wins. Steve Hamilton is a distant second with six wins. Fogelsonger has won both of the young meet's stakes.
