Castledale, upset winner of the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), is training well for a projected return in the $400,000-added Swaps Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II) on July 10, co-owner Frank Lyons said Friday.
"He's doing great. He just worked six furlongs at Santa Anita," said Lyons. The drill, 1:13 1/5 Sunday for trainer Jeff Mullins, was the colt's third work recorded since his last start in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) on May 1.
Irish-bred Castledale won the Santa Anita Derby as a 30-to-1 longshot but was never a factor in the Kentucky Derby, finishing 25 lengths back in 14th
Castledale won his United States debut here in the Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) on the turf in November. Lyons found the colt during a vacation in Ireland last September and retained a minority ownership after he was sold to Greg Knee of Redondo Beach.
The Swaps will be run at 1 1/8 miles.
