Lathenbach Stablesê grade I stakes winner Mayo On the Side, looms the likely choice of the betting public when she faces four rivals in Saturday's $175,000 Chicago Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Arlington Park.
The Chicago Breeders' Cup Handicap will be run at the distance of seven furlongs and includes $75,000 in added money from the Breeders' Cup Fund for eligible horses.
A daughter of French Deputy, Mayo On the Side earned her biggest career score when she defeated 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri in the Humana Distaff Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs on this yearês Kentucky Derby Day card.
Previously, the Carl Nafzger trainee won the $100,000 Doubledogdare at Keeneland on April 16. The 5-year-old mare is seven for 27 overall with earnings in excess of half a million dollars at $519,366. Eusebio Razo Jr. will be aboard Mayo On the Side for the first time in Saturday's headliner and will make up most of the starting high weight of 118 pounds.
Next in the weights at 116 pounds is Marc D. Goldish & Savoy Stable's Smoke Chaser. A daughter of Smoke Glacken
, Smoke Chaser is looking for her third score in as many starts this season. In her two previous trips to the post, the Dale Bennett-trained mare captured a money allowance at Hawthorne Race Course on April 23 and followed that with a victory in the $41,875 Fit For a Queen Stakes over this course on May 15. Eduardo Perez, aboard for both of Smoke Chaser's two 2004 starts, has a return call.
Carl F. Pollard's My Trusty Cat invades from Churchill Downs off a fourth-place effort in the $100,000 Winning Colors Handicap on May 22. One start earlier, the Tale of the Cat filly finished a good second over sloppy going in an allowance race at the Twin Spires oval. A career earner of $361,968, the David Vance pupil looks for her first win since February, when she captured an allowance at Oaklawn Park. Rene Douglas has the mount aboard My Trusty Cat, who has been assigned 114 pounds for her engagement Saturday.
George Brunachi's Our Josephina, winner of the $75,000 Ohio Valley Handicap at Mountaineer Park in her last start, and Allen Tanis' Rich City Girl, a three-time victress over this track, complete the field. Chad Murphy has the call aboard Our Josephina while James Lopez has been named to ride Rich City Girl.
