Two-time leading trainer Hamilton Smith became the second trainer in Colonial Downs history to reach the $1-million mark in purse earnings when his charge Mittens won the $14,000 third race June 14.
Jockey Ryan Fogelsonger, last year's top rider at Colonial Downs, earned his 10th win of the season aboard Mittens.
Smith came into the 2004 meet with $978,751 in earnings over the first seven years of racing at the New Kent, Va., racetrack. He was leading trainer in 2002 and 2003, and was tied with Ferris Allen for top honors in 1998. Allen, a native of Varina, Va., is the only other trainer to have earned $1 million in purses at Colonial.
The Colonial Downs meet extends through July 26. Racing is held Fridays, Mondays, and Tuesdays at 5 p.m. EDT, and Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m.
