The July 17 Claiming Crown, a series of six races at Canterbury Park, lured 281 nominees, organizers said June 10.
Claiming Crown races are limited to horses that have started at least once in the last year for claiming prices that range from $5,000 to $25,000. Owners from around the country have nominated horses to the $550,000 series.
The highlight of the program is the $150,000 Continental Diamond Jewel at 1 1/8 miles. Canterbury will host the Claiming Crown for the fifth time this summer and, as in the past, runners from California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and the Mid-Atlantic region are expected to ship to Minnesota.
Fields are expected to include horses owned by Michael Gill and Richard Englander, currently second and third, respectively, in money won, and horses trained by Steve Asmussen and Scott Lake, first and second, respectively, in races won in the country.
Pre-entries for the Claiming Crown 2004 will be taken July 6, with the final entry date set for July 14.
