Azeri's lackluster performance in her first test against males in the Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) apparently has not dulled her enthusiasm for morning training. The champion older mare in 2002 and 2003 breezed five furlongs at Churchill Downs Wednesday in 1:00.
The move by Azeri was the fastest of 20 at the distance Wednesday. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has not selected a next start for the 6-year-old daughter of
Jade Hunter.
Azeri, the 2002 Horse of the Year, finished eighth in the Met Mile in her most recent. She has won 15 of 19 career starts with three seconds and has earned $3.4 million. The Met Mile was the only time in her career she has finish off the board.
