Bear Fan Seeks Fourth Straight in Vagrancy

The versatile California-bred mare Bear Fan, a winner of three consecutive stakes victories, tops a field of nine fillies and mares entered for the $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap (gr. II) at 6 1/2 furlongs on the Belmont Stakes undercard Saturday.
The Vagrancy is the sixth race on the Belmont Park card.
Bear Fan, who whipped Harmony Lodge by five lengths in the six-furlong Genuine Risk Handicap (gr. II) May 9 at Belmont, carries top weight of 121 pounds. John Velazquez, who was aboard for the Genuine Risk, returns to the saddle on the 5-year-old bay mare by Pine Bluff
. Bear Fan will be spotting the field, which includes Smok'n Frolic, between four and 12 pounds.
Wesley Ward co-owns and trains Bear Fan with Peter Fan. Bear Fan has won seven of her 11 lifetime starts with two seconds and a third and has earnings of $498,150. Prior to the Genuine Risk, she won the Irish O'Brien Stakes on the downhill 6 1/2-furlong turf course at Santa Anita on March 17. Bear Fan was also victorious in the seven-furlong Barbara Fritchie Handicap (gr. II) at Laurel Park on Feb.14.
Grade II winner Smok'n Frolic was off the board in the May 14 Pimlico Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) following a second-place showing in the Bed o'Rose Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) as the 3-5 choice at Aqueduct in mid-April. She seeks to return to the form that saw her register a six-length tally in the March 14 Next Move Handicap (gr. III) for trainer Todd Pletcher. She is the second high weight in the field with 117 pounds.
