Best On Tap set the 6 ½-furlong Washington State record on Monday in winning the eighth race at Emerald Downs.
The New York-bred son of Signal Tap, out of Very Best Friend, carried Ben Russell and 119 pounds over the 6 ½-furlong distance in 1:13 3/5 seconds.
Best On Tap's final running time bettered the previous state record of 1:13 4/5 held by Best Hitter, Bold Ranger, Crowning Meeting and Washington Thoroughbred Hall of Fame member Trooper Seven.
Best On Tap's time was just two-fifths of a second off the world record set by Lucky Forever on May 20, 1995 at Hollywood Park.
Trained by Doug Driever, Best On Tap, a 4-year-old gelding, defeated Pazhalsta by a nose to pick up his third victory in 13 career starts and boost his earnings to $51,505.
