Siphonizer Ready to Go in Barrera Stakes
Del Mar Futurity champion Siphonizer, a breathing problem corrected by surgery, continues his comeback Saturday in Hollywood Park's $150,000 Lazaro S. Barrera Memorial Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs. The Kentucky-bred son of Siphon, trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella for B. Wayne Hughes, heads a field of ten in the Grade II event that leads to the $400,000 Swaps Breeders' Cup Stakes on July 10.After defeating stablemate Minister Eric in last September's $250,000 Del Mar Futurity (gr. II), Siphonizer was soundly beaten in Oak Tree's Norfolk Stakes (gr. II) and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Mandella subsequently discovered the breathing problem."He was getting his soft palate stuck and was choking," Mandella said. "He underwent a type of throat surgery called a myectomy, and we gave him a little rest." Siphonizer returned to action with a six-length victory in a six-furlong allowance race at Churchill Downs on April 24. "I thought the race was pretty good," noted Mandella.Alex Solis will be aboard for the first time as Siphonizer seeks to embellish his record of three wins in six starts for earnings of $229,775.With earnings of $364,395 from a 4-3-1 record in 12 starts, Don'tsellmeshort is the richest runner in the field. The gray colt, trained by Dan Hendricks, has won three stakes races restricted to California-breds and was second to Cheiron in the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes on April 24. Skipaslew, trained by Doug O'Neill, was victorious in the Golden Gate Derby (gr. III) on Jan. 10. Hosco, another O'Neill trainee, won the six-furlong San Miguel (gr. III) at Santa Anita the following day. Don'tsellmeshort , Hosco and Siphonizer carry top weight of 123 pounds, spotting the rest of the field between three and 11 pounds.$150,000 Lazaro S.
