Momentum Supplemented to Shoemaker Field

(from Hollywood Park notes)
Momentum, one of the leading handicap horses in California in 2002, will make his first start in 19 months Monday in the $350,000-added Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park.

Momentum was one of four horses supplemented for $7,000 on Wednesday for the turf event. The other supplementaries were Leroidesanimaux, Dell Place and Glick.

"He worked real well on the grass here Sunday," said trainer Craig Dollase of his decision to supplement Momentum for the Shoemaker. "He had originally run on grass in England before we purchased him. He can go both ways."

Momentum, a 6-year-old son of Nureyev, will make his first start since finishing second to Pleasantly Perfect in the Goodwood Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita on Oct. 6, 2002. He went to the sidelines with a tendon injury that required a lengthy recovery period.

Momentum, owned by J. Paul Reddam, also finished second in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) and Pacific Classic (gr. I) in 2002. Before being switched to dirt, he recorded three firsts and three seconds in eight grass starts.

Leroidesanimaux comes off a course-record victory in the Inglewood Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Hollywood on May 1 for trainer Bobby Frankel. Dell Place won an allowance race on the Inglewood turf in April for trainer Mike Mitchell. Glick won the San Simeon Handicap (gr. IIIT) on the hillside turf course in April for conditioner Jeff Mullins.

A field of nine is probable for the Shoemaker: Designed For Luck (Patrick Valenzuela), King of Happiness (Kent Desormeaux)), Singletary (Jose Valdivia, Jr.), Sweet Return (Victor Espinoza), Tsigane (David Flores), Leroidesanimaux (Jon Court), Dell Place (Javier Santiago), Momentum (Corey Nakatani) and Glick (Tyler Baze). All starters will carry 124 pounds.
