Longshot Governor's Pride shot to the lead and stayed in front the whole way to capture the $50,000 Ben Cohen Stakes, contested at five furlongs on the grass at Pimlico Race Course Saturday.
Under jockey Joe Rocco Jr., the Housebuster gelding stopped the timer in :56.32 over the firm going. Post time favorite Take Achance On Me was unlucky loser by a nose after fighting the winner all the way. Rudirudy finished third. The final time was slightly off of the turf mark of 56.02 that was set a week ago by Go Go Baby Go in The Very One Stakes.
Fans of Governor's Pride were rewarded with a generous $51.80, $16.80 and $11.40 payoff. Take Achance On Me returned $3.40 and $3. Rudirudy was $13 to show. The exacta returned $216.80, while the trifecta paid a healthy $4,014.60.
The winner once held the track record on the dirt for the distance at Pimlico, winning the Edmund O'Brien Stakes on May 26, 2001 in a time of .56.96.
Take Achance On Me pressed the winner throughout but has now finished second 12 times in 33 career starts.
