Momentum, a leading California handicap horse in 2002, is ready for a return to the races following a 19-month layoff, trainer Craig Dollase said Friday.
"He had a tendon, a soft-tissue injury," said Dollase of the 6-year-old horse. "We gave him ample time, it healed real well, and here we are. He's been training real well."
Dollase nominated Momentum to the $75,000-added Ack Ack Handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs on May 31 and said he is considering a couple of other spots for his return as well.
Owned by J. Paul Reddam, Momentum finished second in the Goodwood Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita behind Pleasantly Perfect in his last start on Oct. 6, 2002. The son of Nureyev has recorded four firsts, seven seconds and two thirds in 16 starts for earnings of $664,817.
Momentum joined the Dollase barn in the autumn of 2001 after being purchased privately in England. He won Hollywood Park's Native Diver Handicap (gr. III) in December 2001, his second United States start.
A tough-luck horse in 2002 prior to his injury, Momentum finished second by a nose to Sky Jack in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) and second by three-quarters of a length to Came Home in the Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar after being boxed in at the top of the stretch.
