Laura's Lucky Boy will attempt to give trainer Jason Orman his first stakes victory on Saturday. The colt will be one of the leading contenders in the $100,000 Will Rogers Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-olds on Hollywood Park's turf course.
Orman's Rock Hard Ten finished second to Smarty Jones in last Saturday's Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
Working on a two-race winning streak over grass surfaces, Laura's Lucky Boy, who will be ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, is among eight entrants in the 64th running of the one-mile turf event.
Mambo Train and Toasted, the co-high weights at 121 pounds apeice, are the main threats to Laura's Lucky Boy.
Mambo Train returns to action after chasing Smarty Jones when sixth in the April 10 Arkansas Derby (gr. II). That effort followed a victory in the $100,000 Turf Paradise Derby. Toasted registered a 25-1 upset in Santa Anita Park's $100,000 La Puente Stakes at one mile over grass on April 10.
Since Orman moved Laura's Lucky Boy to turf following a maiden debut defeat on dirt, the Kentucky-bred son of Theatrical
"I've had him about a year, the same time as Rock Hard Ten," said the 35-year-old trainer. "I always thought he was going to be a good horse, but he's developed a lot quicker than I thought." The bay colt's two victories in three starts have earned $57,600 for Mercedes Stable.
Trained by Marcelo Polanco for Everest Stables, Inc., Mambo Train has won two of eight starts for $117,400. The son of Kingmambo
has been first and second in three starts on grass. Kent Desormeaux will be aboard for the first time.
Goncalino Almeida gets the return riding call on Toasted following their stunner in the La Puente. The Kentucky-bred son of Hennessy, who began his career in France, has banked $106,791 from three victories in six starts. Laura de Seroux trains for the S. I.
