Spring Star, winner of the Wilshire Handicap (gr. IIIT) in her last start at Hollwood Park on April 25, has been retired, trainer Richard Mandella said Wednesday from his Santa Anita headquarters. Mandella also confirmed that grade I winner Redattore is retired to and will be sent to stud."She injured an ankle in training after that race," Mandella said of Spring Star. "She's gone back to Kentucky, where they're still hoping to breed her this year."French-bred Spring Star, a 5-year-old mare owned and bred by brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, won five of 12 starts and earned $320,336. She began her career in France, where she won the Prix de Sandringham (Fr-II) at Chantilly in 2002. She joined the Mandella barn last year and won the Palomar Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar.The 2003 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Redattore has been retired because of an ankle injury, Mandella said. The 9-year-old Brazilian-bred horse will go to stud next year at a yet undetermined site.Redattore, who made his last start winning the San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita on Dec. 28, won 15 of 32 outings and earned $1,799,883 for owner Luis Alfredo Taunay of Brazil.
