Philadelphia Park-based Friel's For Real was the real deal in winning the $100,000 Pimlico Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Pimlico Race Course Friday by 2 ΒΌ lengths over Saintly Action. Nonsuch Bay was two lengths back for third. Edward T. Allard conditions the Florida homebred for Gilbert Campbell, Friel's For Real completed the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:45.03. At 11-1, Friel's for Real returned $24.80, $9.20, and $4.80. Saintly Action paid $5.60 and $4, with Nonsuch Bay returning $2.80. The exacta paid $104.80 with the trifecta paying $350.40.The Dale Romans-trained Angela's Love led the field through early fractions of :24.65, :48.63, and 1:12.98 before giving way in the stretch when Friel's for Real, Saintly Action and Nonsuch Bay came pressing.Friel's For Real, under jockey Abel Castellano Jr., made a sweeping move as the field rounded for home, drawing away for an easy win.The 4-year-old daughter of Sword Dancer entered the race off a five-length win in an April 30 $54,000 allowance optional claiming contest at Aqueduct."This is for sure an improving filly," Allard said. "Sword Dance progeny just seem to get better with age. I was a little leery of today's race because I was moving back in distance. The rider said the distance was no problem at all."(Chart, Equibase)
