Stakes producer Brilliant Melody was euthanized May 13 because of complications from the infirmities of old age at Eugene and Laura Melynk's Winding Oaks Farm near Ocala, Fla. The 25-year-old daughter of Cornish Prince was among a package of mares purchased last fall by Winding Oaks from William Schettine.

Bred by North Ridge Farm, unraced Brilliant Melody got out to a quick start as a broodmare. Her first foal, Al's Helen (by Distinctive), set a five-furlong track record at Hollywood Park in her first start as a 2-year-old. She later won two stakes, including the First Flight Handicap (gr. III). She is the dam of graded stakes winner Pure Precision and two other stakes winners.

Brilliant Melody also produced grade II winner Straight Man. A son of Saint Ballado, Straight Man won the Winnercomm Handicap (gr. II). He stands at stud at Schettine's Signature Stallions near Ocala, Fla.

During her broodmare career, Brilliant Melody produced a dozen named foals, seven of which won. Her two youngest foals, both unnamed, are a Saint Ballado 2-year-old colt and a Capote yearling filly. Brilliant Melody did not produce an offspring this year and was not in foal at the time of her death.
