A champion trying to get back on track heads the field for Saturday's Shuvee Handicap (gr. II) at Belmont Park.
Storm Flag Flying, the champion juvenile filly of 2002, returns to the site of two of her best races. As a 2-year-old, she won the Matron and Frizette Stakes (both grade I) at Belmont before taking the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Arlington Park.
Last year at three, the daughter of Storm Cat
made only two starts, losing both, before a leg injury forced her to the sidelines.
Owned and bred by Ogden Mills Phipps and trained by Shug McGaughey, Storm Flag Flying has made two starts this year. She won her first, at Gulfstream Park, before finishing third in the Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) at Aqueduct.
In the mile dirt race, she will be ridden again by John Velazquez.
Five others will line up to test Storm Flag Flying. From the rail out, with jockey assignments and weights, are:
Elegant Mercedes, Aaron Gryder, 113
Storm Flag Flying, John Velazquez, 116
Cherokee Lite, Norberto Arroyo Jr., 113
Passing Shot, Jose Santos, 117
Final Round, Javier Castellano, 114
Roar Emotion, Michael Luzzi, 117
