Maryland Commission Rejects Offer for Rosecroft Raceway

The Maryland Racing Commission rejected the proposed sale of the struggling Rosecroft Raceway, saying the terms of the deal could harm the state's Thoroughbred industry.

Northwind Racing had bid $10 million for the harness track.

Northwind had wanted to offer Thoroughbred simulcasting at Rosecroft without compensating the state's Thoroughbred interests. But the commission voted 6-to-1 yesterday to block the deal. Commissioner John Franzone said he was concerned that allowing Northwind to accept bets on Thoroughbred races from across the country would not benefit the state.

Northwind can appeal the decision, but an attorney for the group said he wasn't sure if an appeal would be filed.

Rosecroft is currently owned by the Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners Association, a group of trainers, horse owners and drivers.
