One week removed from winning the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) aboard Smarty Jones, jockey Stewart Elliott has been named to ride the John Dowd-trained Whirlwind Charlott in the $200,000 Nassau County Breeders' cup Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park. Shake You Down, one of the more consistent sprinters in training over the last two seasons, heads the Bold Ruler Handicap (gr. III) on the same program.
Elliott, a mainstay at Philadelphia Park, gets the call on Whirlwind Charlott, who is coming off a neck loss in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race at Keeneland. The 3-year-old filly will be facing eight sophomore rivals in the seven-furlong Nassau County.
Owned by Classic Star Stable, the daughter of Real Quiet
ran second in the six-furlong Sorority Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth last summer. She sports a 2-3-1 slate from 10 career starts and will making her third start of the season at Belmont. Prior to her Keeneland race, she was fourth in the seven-furlong Cicada Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct.
Dangers in the race include Bending Strings and Delta Sensation. The latter will break from the outside post nine under Jorge Chavez. The daughter of Thunder Gulch--Ski At Dawn, by Baldski has won three in a row for trainer Frank Alexander. Owned by John E. Cay III, Delta Sensation broke her maiden against claiming company at Gulfstream on Feb. 27, but has since rattled off back-to-back allowance victories.
John Gunther's Bending Strings was second to Society Selection in the one-mile Comely Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct on April 9. The Kiaran McLaughlin-trained daughter of American Chance
, out of the Hail the Pirates mare Straight South was also second in the Golden State Mile and fourth in the seven-furlong Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) earlier this year.
In the Bold Ruler Handicap, Shake You Down totes highweight of 121 pounds and will spot eight pounds to four of his rivals and 10 pounds to Canadian Frountier.
Shake You Down makes his first start back in New York this year. After winning the Gravesend Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct by 2 1/4 lengths, the son of Montbrook
won the Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream, then ran a dull fifth in the Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn, before returning to form with a head score in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (gr. III) during the Racing Festival of the South.
Live Oak Plantation's Key Deputy, a winner of three straight for Hall of Fame trainer William Mott, figures in the mix. The son of Deputy Minster, bred by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod, is coming off a sharp three-length score in a seven-furlong optional claimer run in 1:21.81 at Gulfstream on March 6.Nassau County Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr.
