A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect until 10 p.m. EST Friday night in north central Kentucky, with showers and thunderstorms likely before 2 a.m., according to the National Weather Service report in Louisville.
After clearing to partly cloudy overnight, the weather service predicts a 70% chance of showers or thunderstorms after noon Saturday with mostly cloudy conditions and a high of 74 degrees. A tenth to a quarter inch of rain is possible.
A cold front moving across the lower Ohio Valley Saturday afternoon coupled with weak low pressure along the front is being blamed for the unstable weather.
The last time it rained on Derby day was 1994, when Go for Gin splashed home on a sloppy track.
