Retired Trainer W.T. Dunn Dead

W.T. "Wally" Dunn, who sent out four Kentucky Derby starters and won the 1964 Kentucky Oaks with Blue Norther, died recently at his Arcadia, Calif., home. He was 93.

Dunn, who grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and was one of three brothers who entered racing, first went to the Derby with Arroz in I952 and later with Correspondent (1953), Green Hornet (1962), and Dominar (i1966).

Correspondent set a track record in the Blue Grass Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Keeneland and went off the 3-1 second-choice behind the favored entry of Native Dancer and Social Outcast in the Run for the Roses. He gave his connections plenty of hope in the early part with a second-place position, but weakened and finished fifth. It turned out to be Dunn's best Derby finish. As a 4-year-old, Correspondent won the Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap.

Dunn, who trained 11 stakes winners, enjoyed his best season in 1964. Blue Norther not only won the Kentucky Oaks, but also that year's Ashland Stakes and Santa Susana Stakes. Dunn's other stakes winner that year, South African import Colorado King, equaled a world record in winning the American Handicap and also won the Hollywood Gold Cup and Sunset Handicaps.
