Apple Blossom Order Changed; Wild Spirit DQ'd to 3rd
Wild Spirit, the second-place finisher in the April 3 Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. II), was disqualified to third Tuesday by the Oaklawn Racing Commission for a bumping incident with Star Parade at the top of the stretch. The decision overturns the Oaklawn Park stewards' ruling following the race that there would be no change in the order of finish. Star Parade is now the second-place finisher, adding $50,000 to her bankroll, and Wild Spirit was placed third. The change does not affect winner Azeri.Darrel Vienna, trainer of Star Parade, appealed the decision of Oaklawn stewards Johnnie Johnson, Larry Snyder, and John Ferraro, saying the panel errored by not disqualifying Wild Spirit. According to the Daily Racing Form, Vienna called former jockey Corey Black as an expert witness on race riding.Sumya Us Stable, the owner of Wild Spirit, has 30 days to appeal the commission's decision, the Form reports.
