Black Leaves TVG; Pursues Career as Jockey Agent

Former jockey Corey Black has resigned his position as a racing analyst/ with the TV Games Network in order to pursue a career as full-time agent for jockey Patrick Valenzuela.

"As much as I loved working for TVG, I felt like a spectator and not a player," Black said. "Of course, the money (being a jockey agent) can be lucrative, but it's also a lot more work and a lot more action. I'm happy to be able to be a part of it again."

Valenzuela, who was suspended for the remainder of this year by Santa Anita Park stewards in early April after he refused a drug test back in January, received a stay from the California Horse Racing Board the week of April 12 and will resume riding April 25 while he appeals the termination of his conditional license.

Black said Valenzuela has received a lot of support from horsemen and has four calls for the jockey April 25, including Makeup Artist for trainer John Shirreffs in the Wilshire Handicap (gr. III). The 41-year-old jockey resumed exercising horses April 21 at Santa Anita.

"(Valenzuela) wants to limit his mounts at first--just until he regains his complete fitness," Black said. "He'll be very busy on Oaks and Derby days (while many members of the riding colony are out of town)."
