Carols Folly, Dam of Millionaires Glitter Woman and Unbridled Elaine, Dead

Summer Wind Farm's Carols Folly, who achieved fame as the dam of two millionaires--Glitter Woman and Unbridled Elaine--was euthanized April 20 at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington after delivering a Storm Cat colt by Caesarian section. The 17-year-old daughter of Taylor's Falls was taken to the clinic because of a ruptured cecum (part of the large intestine). Once there, it was determined that she could not be saved, but her foal could be rescued. The colt was due April 16.

"He's at the neo-natal center at Hagyard," said Karen Bailey, who owns Summer Wind near Georgetown, Ky., with her father, Frank Lyon Jr., and mother, Jane. "He's big; weighs 160 pounds. We're keeping our fingers crossed with him."

Summer Wind bought Carols Folly privately in the fall of 2000. By that time, Glitter Woman, a grade I winner by Glitterman bred by Golden Orb Farm and K. David Schwartz, had chalked up career earnings of $1,256,805. The following year, the deal looked even better when Unbridled Elaine won that year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I). Bred by Golden Orb and sired by Unbridled's Song  , Unbridled Elaine retired with earnings of $1,770,740.

Bred in Alabama by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Stebbins, Carols Folly won five races as a 2-year-old, including the Airdrie Stakes at Birmingham. She produced seven named foals, three of which won. A daughter, Gwenjinsky, is a grade II producer.

Carols Folly will be buried at Summer Wind near Evil Elaine, dam of Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, and Ingot Way, dam of Horse of the Year Skip Away. Evil Elaine died in March.
