Dr. Ted Hill, a steward for the New York Racing Association appointed by The Jockey Club, will serve as interim chief state steward during Kentucky Derby (gr. I) week.

The position of chief state steward is being held on an interim basis by Michael "Mickey" Sample. He will continue in that role during the Churchill Downs spring meet except for Derby week, which begins April 26. Sample will be on leave that week due to previously scheduled medical appointments.

"Dr. Hill brings an impeccable record, an impressive range of experience in the industry and an unwavering devotion to the integrity of racing that make him the perfect person for this critical job at a most important time," said LaJuana S. Wilcher, secretary of the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, which oversees the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority.

Hill brings a wide range of experience to the job, including duty as a former examining veterinarian for NYRA. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Hill worked in private practice treating horses and other large animals in Florida, Delaware, and Pennsylvania before he moved his practice to New York in 1976. The Jockey Club appointed Hill as its representative on the NYRA panel of stewards in 1996.
