French champion and prominent sire Machiavellian, a Darley standard bearer, has been withdrawn from covering duties at Dalham Hall Stud near Newmarket, England, because of a recurrence of laminitis.

The 17-year-old son of Mr Prospector, who has sired 46 stakes winners, has been afflicted by a laminitic right front foot for several years. Liam O'Rourke, stud director at Dalham Hall Stud, said "it's in the horse's best interest to stop covering and to give him the rest he needs. His condition is quite stable and the horse is bright,
and is not in too much discomfort."

Machiavellian, who was produced from the Halo mare Coup de Folie, has sired such champions as Street Cry and Almutawakel, both winners of the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). No date has yet been set for his return to the breeding shed.
