Bernie Hettel, the former chief state steward and executive director of the defunct Kentucky Racing Commission, has been hired by Churchill Downs as a consultant on racing issues.
Churchill Downs president Steve Sexton said Hettel will offer recommendations "on a variety of areas of racing." This includes existing rules and possible rule changes.
Hettel was asked to resign his former positions after Gov. Ernie Fletcher abolished the commission and replaced it with the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority.
The authority continues to look for a permanent executive director and chief steward. Michael "Mickey" Sample is serving as interim chief steward at the Keeneland meet.
