The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association has announced there will be 60 Cal-bred stakes races in 2001 with total purses exceeding $6.2 million, an average of more than $100,000 per race. The CTBA also announced that at the request of the organization and the Thoroughbred Owners of California, racing secretaries at Southern California tracks have agreed to increase the value of 2- and 3-year-old Cal-bred maiden $32,000 claiming races to a claiming price of $40,000. The CTBA said the increase, which takes effect beginning with the Santa Anita winter/spring meet, better addresses the increasing costs of raising a Thoroughbred and preparing it for the racetrack and is more reflective of the true value of California-breds. Also, the Cal-bred owners' bonus in open company has now been increased from 25% to 30% of the purse level on all open allowance and overnight stakes races, effective at Santa Anita and Golden Gate.
