Jockey Melissa Peery earned the biggest stakes victory of her career when she guided maiden Santiam Top Jazz to the $20,000 Oregon Derby championship Saturday at Portland Meadows.

The 3-year-old He's Tops–Jazzi Pink gelding sat seventh early, refusing to challenge a quick early pace. Kicked into gear with two furlongs to go, Santiam Top Jazz rallied four wide and was all out to win down the stretch, fending off a surprising late charge by the longest shot on the board, 45-1 Mother's Day Bandit.

The Oregon bred returned $10 to win.

"He was a little green today but manageable," said Peery. "When we hit the quarter-pole he really got into gear and when I asked him to roll, he rolled."

The 2-1 favorite Mythical Road went right to the front, setting fractions of :22 4/5, :47 3/5 and 1:14 2/5 before beginning to labor at the three-sixteenths pole. Might E Man made his bid three furlongs out, took the lead at the head of the stretch while three wide and was simply outfinished by the winner, forced to settle for a third place finish.

Time of the race was 1:572/5

Peery captured the first stakes win of her career earlier this meet with Northern Baquero in the McFadden Memorial. Pressed to choose between riding him again after a ninth-place finish in the Oregon Derby prep Preview Stakes, or Santiam Top Jazz, Peery credits her agent for making the choice.

Northern Baquero with Jose Rivera, Jr. finished fourth at 26-1.

Returning to the jockey's room, Peery was greeted with a celebratory dump of a bucket of water by fellow rider Twyla Beckner.

This was also the first Oregon Derby victory for owner Burle Oakley and trainer Vanessa Hunt and the first time maidens ever finished one-two. It was also the second winner on the card for Peery.
