Hot Pace No Problem; Peace Rules Again
Undaunted by a brisk pace battle, Edmund Gann's Peace Rules had more than enough left to win the $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) Saturday by two lengths over Ole Faunty.Peace Rules, ridden by Jerry Bailey for trainer Bobby Frankel, and Saint Liam, with Edgar Prado aboard, engaged in another battle for the lead similar to the one they had in the New Orleans Handicap on Feb. 29.Peace Rules won again, but Saint Liam, who lost by a head in February, faded out of contention and Ole Faunty came on to get second by a neck. The final time for the 1 1/8-mile main track test was 1:48 1/5.With Saint Liam on the lead, the two blitzed through early fractions of :22 1/5, :45 2/5 and 1:09 3/5 while leaving the field far behind going into the final turn.Peace Rules, third in the 2003 Kentucky Derby runner-up and favored Saturday at odds of 4-5 while carrying top weight of 120 pounds in the field of six older horses, shook clear at the top of the stretch and still had plenty left for the stretch drive.The 4-year-old son of Jules–Hold to Fashion (by Hold Your Peace) collected his eighth win in 16 starts while earning $300,000. His career bankroll stands at $2,739,990.He paid $3.60, $3, and $2.20. Ole Faunty returned $5.20 and $2.80. Saint Liam's show was $2.40.
