Johar, who deadheated for first with High Chaparral in last year's John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) and was a finalist for an Eclipse Award, has been retired because of a suspensory injury, according to Daily Racing Form. The injury, which occurred in mid-March, came at a time when a deal to sell Johar privately was near completion, but it now has been scrapped.

Johar, a son of Gone West out of champion Windsharp (by Lear Fan), was one of four 2003 Breeders' Cup winners for trainer Richard Mandella. A homebred for The Thoroughbred Corp. of the late Prince Ahmed Salman, Johar also won the Hollywood Derby (gr. IT), Oak Tree Derby (gr. IIT), and San Marcos Stakes (gr. IIT) during his career, and was retired with six wins from 16 starts and earnings of $1,494,496. He was scheduled to make his 5-year-old in the April 3 Arcadia Handicap (gr. IIT).

The Thoroughbred Corp. has renewed efforts to sell Johar.
