Board Upholds Dutrow's Suspension, Fine

Prominent New York trainer Richard E. Dutrow Jr. must serve a 45-day suspension and pay a $3,000 fine for an equine drug positive, the New York State Racing and Wagering Board ruled Tuesday.

Dutrow, who was the leading trainer in New York in 2001 and 2002 and was second to Todd Pletcher last year, had appealed the suspension and fine assessed for a positive for a metabolite of the drug mepivicaine. Farmer Jake, trained by Dutrow, tested positive in a post-race urine sample following the sixth race at Aqueduct on April 27, 2003.

During its monthly meeting, the board approved the recommendations of hearing officer Russell H. Baller Jr. that Dutrow, 44, be suspended and fined. Balller's findings were contained in a 20-page report.
