Lucky Pulpit Among West Coast Workers

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Williams' Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) candidate Lucky Pulpit, eighth in the San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) in his last start after displacing his palate, worked a half-mile in an easy :50 3/5 over Santa Anita's fast main track Tuesday morning.

"He's doing well," trainer Cliff Sise Jr. said. "I'm a little worried about what kind of pace the race will have with Lion Heart out now. I just hope (Lucky Pulpit) draws the outside (post position)."

Lucky Pulpit, who finished second behind St. Averil in the Jan. 17 Santa Catalina Stakes (gr. II) and third in the Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) last year, has earned $125,260 from a career line of 8-2-3-1. Sise said he'd consider sending the Kentucky-bred son of Pulpit   to Louisville and a shot at the May 1 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) with a top effort on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Trainer Marcelo Polanco sent Everest Stables' Turf Paradise Derby winner Mambo Train out for a work on Tuesday and the son of Kingmambo logged five furlongs in 1:00 3/5. Polanco said that as of now, Mambo Train is "50-50" to run in either Saturday's Santa Anita Derby or the April 10 Arkansas Derby (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park and that a decision won't be made until the last minute.

Mambo Train has won two of seven career starts, with one second, for earnings of $97,400.

Over at Hollywood Park, Louisiana Derby (gr. II) runner-up Borrego went 1:16 2/5 for trainer Beau Greeley. Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) hopeful Master David fired a bullet six furlongs in 1:12 3/5.
