South African trainer Mike de Kock had a 100% record at the Dubai World Cup meeting, after the victories of Ipi Tombe and Victory Moon last year. He maintained that faultless form when his Lundy's Liability won the UAE Derby (UAE-II), following in the hoofprints of stable companion Victory Moon.
The winner, a Brazilian-bred son of Candy Stripes, was actually winning for the first time in the UAE on his third start, having been second to Petit Paris (runner-up here) last time and third to Little Jim (third here) in the UAE 2,000 Guineas on his previous outing.
However, there were valid excuses on both occasions for the horse, who was a grade III winner in his homeland. His connections were confident he would reverse the form.
Petit Paris tried to make all until Little Jim hit the front into the straight, but Weichong Marwing always looked confident on the winner who took up the running inside the final furlong. Once he hit the front it was all over and he galloped to the line in good style by three quarter of a length. Petit Paris, a Chilean bred ridden by Jerry Bailey, was three-quarters of a length in front of Little Jim. None of the Northern Hemisphere horses ever threatened. The time for the 1 1/8-mile event was 1:50.83.
A delighted De Kock said: "I knew we could reverse both pieces of form as there was always going to be pace in this race and he is a true stayer. He had missed a lot of work before his run in the Guineas and the slow pace just did not help last time.
"I quite like it here," he exclaimed.
Lundy's Liability is set to further his career in the United States, where he will join Richard Mandella.
