Michael "Mickey" Sample has been named interim chief racing steward for the Keeneland spring meet that begins April 2, said LaJuana Wilcher, secretary of the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet.
Sample currrently is state steward at Turfway Park in Northern Kentucky. He has served as a racing official at Keeneland since 2001.
Kentucky lost its chief steward earlier this year when Bernie Hettel, longtime executive director of the Kentucky Racing Commission, was asked to resign after Gov. Ernie Fletcher abolished the commission and replaced it with the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority. The authority continues to look for a permanent executive director and chief steward.
Sample also has served as a steward at racetracks in Florida, Kentucky, New Hampshire, New York, and Pennsylvania.
