The board of directors of Magna Entertainment Corp. announced Wednesday that it has elected Brian Tobin as a director and vice-chairman of the MEC Board. Tobin is the chief executive officer and a director of MI Developments Inc., which is the majority shareholder of MEC.
Frank Stronach, chairman of Magna, said in a statement, "Brian will be an excellent director and I look forward to his contributions to our board's deliberations."
Tobin retired from politics in January 2002. During his political career, he was Canada's federal minister of fisheries from 1993 to 1996, premier of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1996 to 2000 and federal minister of industry from October 2000 until January 2002.
Tobin was later a strategic advisor to a major Canadian law firm and served as a director of a number of publicly traded corporations. He was appointed as CEO of MI Developments Inc. earlier this month.
