Gilded Lilly, dam of champion and successful sire Gilded Time, died Feb. 12 of a ruptured aorta at Castleton Lyons Farm near Lexington. The 25-year-old daughter of What a Pleasure was in foal to Tale of the Cat. The foal, not yet due, also was lost.Gilded Lilly was owned by Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds and Andover Way Partnership. The two parties privately bought Gilded Lilly (in foal to Crusader Sword) in the winter of 1993 around the time Gilded Time was named champion 2-year-old male. A son of Timeless Moment, Gilded Time won all four races in 1992, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). As a stallion, he has sired 35 stakes winners.Campaigned as a homebred by Harry Mangurian Jr., Gilded Lilly won four of 25 starts and earned $50,235 before entering her breeder's broodmare band.Gilded Lilly, who was produced from the Princequillo mare Luquillo, produced 16 named foals, 14 of which won, including a pair of stakes-placed runners. Two of her daughters are multiple stakes producers. Gilded Lilly's youngest foal is an unnamed Silver Deputy yearling fillyGilded Lilly's half-brother, High Echelon, won the 1970 Belmont Stakes.
