A wide trip wasn't enough to keep Smok'n Frolic from a romping 6 1/2-length repeat victory in the $108,400 Next Move Handicap (gr. III) for fillies and mares Sunday at Aqueduct.
The Dogwood Stable color bearer, carrying top weight of 119 pounds, was stuck four wide on the first turn, but proved much too good for her six rivals in the 1 1/8-mile Next Move. The winning time was 1:51 2/5.
Winning jockey Richard Migliore, who won the $1 million Florida Derby (gr. 1) with Friends Lake at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, was able to overcome the indirect route.
"I wasn't thrilled with my trip on the first turn because I didn't like being four-wide," Migliore said. "Honestly, I couldn't do much about that. I felt like I was on the best horse. At least she was relaxed and settled, so I didn't have to get into a fight with her or get into her mouth."
Smok'n Frolic – a 5-year-old Florida-bred gray mare by Smoke Glacken
, out of Cherokyfrolicflash (Green Dancer) – is trained by Todd Pletcher. She earned $65,040 for Dogwood Stable. In her career, she is 9-6-1 from 28 starts with earnings of $1,441,540.
Smok'n Frolic won the 2003 Next Move under John Velazquez by 2 1/2 lengths. She is now 3-1-0 from four starts with earnings of $281,160 at Aqueduct.
Our Tune went to the front from the starting gate and set fractions of :23 3/5, :47 and 1:11 1/5. Smok'n Frolic stayed a few lengths back, then smoothly overtook the frontrunner around the turn for home. Nobody could mount a challenge to the winner.
Stake, under Shaun Bridgmohan, took second by a nose over fast-closing U K Trick and Pedro Cotto, Jr.
The heavy favorite paid $3.60, $2.50 and $2.10. Stake returned $3.90 and $3.20. U K Trick's show was $2.60. The $2 exacta was worth $19.60.
