Smok'n Frolic and Passing Shot will break next to each other again Sunday when they start in the $100,000, 1 1/8-mile Next Move Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct.
In last month's Sabin Handicap (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park, Dogwood Stable's Smok'n Frolic took herself and three others out of contention early on the clubhouse turn. Looking to settle inside with Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey aboard, Smok'n Frolic took a right turn instead of a left when Ivanavinalot made the lead and barely cleared over in front of her.
Affected by the incident on the clubhouse turn was Joseph Shields Jr.'s Passing Shot, who broke just outside of Smok'n Frolic and was the first to draw contact.
"It was tough to tell exactly what happened," said Todd Pletcher, trainer of Smok'n Frolic. "It looked very similar to what happened in the New Orleans Handicap with Peace Rules and Saint Liam
The 5-year-old Smok'n Frolic is a five-time graded stakes winner with her biggest payday coming in the Sunshine Millions Distaff last year.
Trained by Hall of Fame Allen Jerkens, Passing Shot posted a stunning upset in the Personal Ensign (gr. I) at Saratoga last summer. The Personal Ensign was the last triumph in a three-win streak for Passing Shot. She ran twice more in 2003, finishing third behind Wild Spirit in the Ruffian and last in the Beldame.
"She might have been a little tired at the end of the year," Jerkens said. "She didn't run at all in the Beldame."
Austin's Mom was scheduled to compete in the Next Move, but a pending sale forced her removal from consideration.
