Eclipse champion Action This Day breezed a half-mile in :47 3/5 Tuesday in preparation for Sunday's San Felipe Stakes (gr. II), in which he will face St Averil and the Bob Baffert pair of Odds On and Preachinatthebar.

Action This Day finished fourth in his 3-year-old debut in the Sham Stakes, making a big move on the far turn before racing evenly in the final furlong. Trainer Richard Mandella is expecting a much-improved effort in the San Felipe.

"I think he's going to run very well on Sunday," Mandella said. "I gave him a rest after the Breeders' Cup, and put him on a work schedule I thought would work best to have him ready for the Santa Catalina Stakes (gr. II). But works don't always go as you want. It wasn't because of him, but because his workmates didn't go fast enough. I just didn't like where he was at, so I decided to wait until the Sham. I may have been a little overconficent bringing him back, but I have a nice sound, healthy horse.

"He's gotten longer and taller, and bigger in every way. There's a lot more there, and racing and seasoning are going to bring that out."
