Limehouse to Take Next Step in Tampa Bay Derby
Dogwood Stable's Limehouse, winner of the Feb. 14 Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park, will make his next start in the March 14 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida.Limehouse, trained by Todd Pletcher, worked March 8 at Palm Meadows Training Center in South Florida with Angel Cordero aboard. The 3-year-old colt by Grand Slam covered five furlongs in 1:01 1/5."It was a good, sharp work," said Cot Campbell, president of Dogwood Stables. "He will ship up to Tampa very early (March 14), and Pat Day will ride him."Campbell said he considered racing Limehouse in the March 13 Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream. That race is at 1 1/8 miles."We prefer the mile and a sixteenth at Tampa, however, even though we're aware that horses sometimes need a race over the track," Campbell said. "If this is the case, it will give us a good foundation for the next step. Our objective remains, however, to win the Tampa Bay Derby."John Velazquez rode Limehouse in the Hutcheson, but he has a commitment to ride at Gulfstream the day of the Tampa Bay Derby, Campbell said. Day rode Summer Squall, owned by Dogwood, to victory in the 1990 Preakness Stakes (gr. I).Limehouse has four wins--three of them stakes--and earnings of $350,435.Other probables for the Tampa Bay Derby include Capejinsky, El Prado Rob, Swingforthefences, Hitthegroundrunnin, Kaufy Mate, and Zakocity.
