Honest Bronze Abe Takes Conniver Stakes

(from Laurel report)
Bronze Abe won the $75,000 Conniver Stakes at Laurel Park Sunday, but runner-up Search For A Cure made the 4-year-old gray mare really work for it.

The victory was the fifth added money win for the daughter of Two Punch.

Sent to post as the 3-5 favorite, Bronze Abe raced straight to the lead in the seven- furlong test but was immediately hounded on the inside by Search For A Cure. The pair raced in tandem down the backstretch, around the far turn and through the stretch. Bronze Abe edged to a narrow lead but never had a breather, winning by a half- length in 1:23 3/5. In Love was third, just a nose in front of Darnestown.

Bronze Abe paid $3.20 in a field narrowed to four starters when morning line choice Gazillion and longshot Chiquilina were scratched.

Jockey Eric Rodriguez rode Bronze Abe for Hall of Fame trainer Bud Delp.

Bronze Abe won the Heavenly Cause Stakes as a 2-year old in 2001, the Jameela a year later, the Skipat Stakes last year and the What A Summer Stakes in January.

"It looks like there are a couple spots for her at Pimlico and then we'll give her a couple months off this summer and get her ready for the Maryland Million this fall," added Delp. "That would be a perfect encore to win there before being retired."
