In the Wings Relieved of Stallion Duty Because of Laminitis

Darley stallion In the Wings, who won the 1990 Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. I) and was a champion in France, was diagnosed with laminitis the past weekend and has been relieved temporarily from stallion duty. The 18-year-old son of Sadler's Wells covered 15 mares at Kildangan Stud in County Kildare, Ireland, prior to the diagnosis.

"In the Wings is a terrific patient and appears to be responding to treatment, but there is no way telling when it might end," said Kildangan manager Joe Osborne. "We're watching it day by day. Overall, he's healthy, and a particular favorite of everyone at Darley."

Owned by Sheikh Mohammed, Darley stands one of In the Wings' major sons, champion Singspiel, at its Dalham Hall near Newmarket, England, but so far the Darley mares booked to In the Wings have not been reassigned to other stallions.

In the Wings, who was produced from the Shirley Heights mare High Hawk, raced as a homebred for Sheikh Mohammed, winning seven of 11 races and earning $1,562,335. He has sired 50 stakes winners, 30 of which are graded or group winners. Singspiel, his richest runner, earned $5.9 million, and his many wins included a score in the 1997 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I)
