Imperial Beauty, topped Tuesday's session of Tattersalls December sale.
Michael Tabor and John Magnier purchased imperial Beauty, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Imperial Ballet, for 950,000 guineas (about US$1,426,425) to top Tuesday's session of the Tattersalls December sale in Newmarket, England. The 4-year-old filly, a multiple stakes winner whose placings include a second in the 1999 Prix de l'Abbaye De Longchamp (Fr-I), was purchased on behalf of Tabor and Magnier by Patrick Cooper of the BBA (Ireland). According to Tattersalls, the filly will be sent to trainer John Hammond in France. The seventh-highest priced filly in training sold in Europe, Imperial Beauty was consigned by Knocktoran Stud of Ireland, on behalf of the complete dispersal of CES Racing Ltd., which had bred the filly.
Agent Charlie Gordon-Watson paid Tuesday's second highest price of 920,000 guineas (about $1,381,380) for Sumoto,, a Mtoto mare who has produced champion Compton Admiral. The mare was purchased on behalf of Lord and Lady Lord-Webber's Watership Down Stud and was sold by the National Stud for Jim Furlong. Furlong had bought Sumoto for 6,500 guineas at the 1997 Tattersalls December sale. Tattersalls reported the sale price for Sumoto is the second highest, behind the 1.6-million paid for Reine Mathilde in 1988, for a mare sold at the December sale.
Tattersalls reported the day's average price of 56,637 guineas from a gross of 11,497,500 guineas represented a 12% gain over the comparable session one year ago.
