The Canadian Justice Department is investigating Woodbine Entertainment Group's new online wagering site that critics contend violates the law and should be shut down.

Justice Department spokesman Sylvain Beaudry confirmed that the Toronto-based Woodbine group's site, HorsePlayer Interactive, is being investigated, Canadian Press reported Feb. 27.

He said the site debuted last month last month without amendment to Canada's Criminal Code, which allows only provincial governments to conduct Internet gambling.

Most betting sites are based offshore or on native reserves.

"`There was no change to the Criminal Code," he told CP in an interview. "We've gotten letters in the department on this issue, and we're looking at it."
