Commingled pari-mutuel handle on United States races in February was up 6.43% from the same month in 2015, according to the Thoroughbred Racing Economic Indicators released by Equibase March 4.

The increase came despite a 4.69% reduction in race days to 264. The number of races was down 2.31% from 2,341 in February 2015 to 2,287.

Handle totaled $812,868,874 in February versus $763,762,376 for the same month last year. Average handle per race increased 4.72% to $272,241.

Total purses of $62,301,741 represented a 2.38% increase from last February.

For the first two months of 2016, wagering on U.S. races totaled $1,643,395,765, up 4.26% from $1,576,225,722 for the same period last year. Purses were down 1.24% to $125,312,229 and race days down 6.52% to 545.
