Mahmoud Fustok has bred and/or raced successful Thoroughbreds for nearly half his life, but it is doubtful the native of Saudi Arabia has had so many horses with such potential in training all at once. In August, Fustok's Silver Wagon won the grade I Hopeful at Saratoga for trainer Ralph Ziadie. Since that win, Ziadie has made it clear that the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), is probably not an option. However, another standout from Fustok's stable emerged in the same division as Eurosilver captured the grade II Lane's End Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland on Oct. 4. Trainer Nick Zito and Fustok were already upbeat--the day before they had celebrated Najran's victory in Keeneland's Phoenix Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III).
Fustok owns Buckram Oak Farm near Lexington. He breeds, sells, and buys horses in the Buckram Oak name. Najran and Silver Wagon were both purchased at auction, but Eurosilver is a Buckram Oak homebred.
Ikbal Khalil purchased Russian Tango, the dam of Eurosilver, for $340,000 at the 1991 Keeneland July yearling sale from her breeder, Warren Rosenthal. The mare made all 15 of her starts for Buckram Oak and trainer Mohammed Moubarak. Among her four wins was the 1994 The Very One Handicap at Gulfstream Park.
Russian Tango is a daughter of champion and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) winner Brave Raj. Russian Tango's first foal, Luksor, made 21 starts for Buckram Oak, but managed to win only once. Her second foal, Tanghost, died as a 2-year-old.
Her third foal, Eurosilver finished second to Silver Wagon in his first start, but the margin was a big one--71/2 lengths. Eurosilver broke his maiden impressively in his second start, winning by 53/4 lengths. That was his last race prior to the Lane's End.
Unbridled's Song has sired 25 stakes winners since he entered stud at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky., in 1997. The son of Unbridled has been represented this year by 12 added-money winners, including graded stakes winners Marylebone (gr. I), Domestic Dispute (gr. II), and Grey Song (Aust-II). Unbridled's Song stood the 2003 season at Taylor Made for $100,000.--K.I.G.Sire: UNBRIDLED'S SONG
