No filly has ever won the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I), but Island Fashion could become the first in 67 runnings of the race at 1 ΒΌ miles on March 6.

"We nominated her to the Santa Anita Handicap," trainer Marcelo Polanco said Wednesday morning. "We might point her for that. I don't know the last time a filly ran in that race but we want to keep our options open."

Island Fashion, a 4-year-old daughter of Petionville   who won the La Brea Stakes and the Santa Monica Handicap (both gr. I), both at seven furlongs in her last two starts, breezed four furlongs Wednesday in :47 2/5. "I got her in :47 2/5 and galloped out (five furlongs) in a minute and two-fifths," Polanco said.

"If she comes up good to the Santa Anita Handicap and we get a good weight we're going to think about it. I'd have to think my filly would be tough."

Regular rider Kent Desormeaux, who won the race aboard Milwaukee Brew in 2002, would ride Island Fashion in the Big 'Cap. He has been tacking 116 pounds but Polanco said the 34-year-old rider would do as low as 115 if Island Fashion were assigned that for the handicap.

"He said he would get down to 115 if necessary," Polanco said. "The filly will be nominated to the Apple Blossom (at Oaklawn Park on April 3) and we also are considering the Santa Margarita (on March 14). But in nominating her to the Santa Anita Handicap, we want to keep that option open."

The last filly to run in the Big 'Cap was Serena's Song, who finished seventh in 1996. Victorious Mr Purple, an 18-1 outsider saddled by Ron McAnally and ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, beat her more than 12 lengths.

In other Big 'Cap developments:

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Pleasantly Perfect and Olmodavor worked in company Tuesday, going a mile in 1:37 1/5. Trainer Richard Mandella termed the drills "fabulous."

Sarava, winner of the 2002 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), worked five furlongs Wednesday in 1:00. On Tuesday, Saint Buddy and Toccet worked six furlongs in 1:11 1/5 and 1:14 2/5, respectively.

Buddy Gil, last year's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner, went seven furlongs Tuesday in a bullet 1:25 1/5 for Jeff Mullins.

Probable for the Santa Anita Handicap: Buddy Gil, Domestic Dispute, Olmodavor, Pleasantly Perfect, Royal Place, Saint Buddy, Sarava, Southern Image, Star Cross and Toccet.
