English Bloodstock Agent Peter Wragg Dead

Peter Wragg, a prominent bloodstock agent who was the brother of trainer Geoff and a son of champion jockey and leading trainer Harry, died last week at the age of 76 after a lengthy illness, according to the Racing Post.A bloodstock agent since 1949, Wragg purchased the foundation yearlings and mares for breeder/owner Gerry Oldham's operation. With Harry Wragg as trainer, the venture enjoyed great success. Among the horses was champion Talgo, winner of the 1956 Irish Derby and runner-up to Ribot in that year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.Other purchases included 1961 champion 2-year-old Miralgo, 1959 Irish Derby winner Fidalgo, and Plaza, the dam of 1969 champion and St. Leger Stakes winner Intermezzo.The late Lord Weinstock's Ballymacoll Stud also prospered under Peter Wragg's expertise. One of the most notable buys was Gaily, who won the 1974 Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I). Gaily is the third dam of Ballymacoll's 1996 Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) winner Pilsudski. Wragg also bought Ela-Mana-Mou in training, who went on to became a 1980 champion in England and France for Ballymacoll. Peter Reynolds, Ballymacoll manager, said Wragg "was a wonderful guy. He was the most honest man I ever came across in the bloodstock world."
