J. Frank Northcutt Jr., Leading Apprentice Rider, Dead

J. Frank Northcutt Jr., the leading apprentice rider in 1959, died Feb. 22 in Ocala, Fla. He was 61.

Northcutt, who captured his first race at Charles Town in West Virginia, won 282 races in 1959. He later served in Vietnam.

Northcutt rode until the late 1980s. After that, he worked as a valet in Ohio and broke yearlings and galloped horses for Eddie Woods in Ocala.

His survivors include two sisters.
